The BDIYI Committee

The BDIYI committee members volunteer their time to promote the Iyengar Yoga teaching method. We are like minded individuals who work together to help connect the local Iyengar community, supporting our teacher and student members.   

Meet the Committee…. 

Alan Brown, Chairperson

Alan began practicing Iyengar Yoga in 1979 with Lilian Biggs, and qualified as an Iyengar Yoga teacher in 1987. He currently holds Senior Intermediate level 3 Iyengar Yoga teaching certificate and is a teacher trainer and assessor for the IYAUK. Alan first visited RIMYI in 1990 and has learned from BKS Iyengar, Geeta Iyengar and Prashant Iyengar on numerous occasions. He teaches yoga classes for all levels of practitioner from beginners to experienced students in Yorkshire and Lancashire as well as workshops throughout the UK and Internationally. Alan worked on the assessment and teacher training committee of the IYAUK for many years and has been chairperson of the BDIYI since 2008.

Ben McKay, Membership Secretary

Ben McKay is an A&E nurse by trade. In his free time loves to practice Iyengar Yoga and also enjoys hill walking and wild camping. Ben's yoga journey started in spring 2017 following an injury. He started with the intention of stretching out the injury but since then yoga has become part of his life. He regularly attends classes with his teacher, Sue Hartley. Ben is excited to be taking over as Membership Secretary, and is looking forward to becoming a part of the BDIYI community.

Gerda Bayliss, Social Media

With a family of Iyengar Yoga teachers Gerda has always been immersed in the yoga world. Attending her first class at the age of 10 with Lillian Biggs, she continues to attend regular teachers classes with Alan Brown and other Senior teachers. She has been to the Ramamani Iyengar Institute in India twice and is looking forward to attending again in December 2018. She is strongly involved in the Iyengar Yoga community, keeping up to date with events in the yoga world by helping to run the Iyengar Yoga Association UK’s facebook page and the Bradford and District Iyengar Yoga Facebook page. She currently holds an Intermediate Junior Level 1 certificate.

Caroline Smith, Yoga Events

Caroline teaches largely in the Colne area. She has been practicing Iyengar yoga for more than 18 years and teaching for 13 years. She trained initially with Alan Brown completing her introductory certificate in 2003. Since then she has gone on to achieve firstly her Junior certificates and then in 2014 her Senior 1 level of Certification. Caroline has studied with Senior UK and International teachers. She has visited India to train with the Iyengar family in Pune and has assisted in our local yoga therapy class for 7 years.

Jacky McGeoch, Yoga Events

Jacky began classes with Alan Brown 25 years ago, and qualified to teach in 2004. She attended RIMYI Institute in Pune, India in November 2007, and enjoys workshops with many senior teachers as well as continuing to attend Alan’s classes. She has an interest in Yoga philosophy. Jacky has been helping to organise the events for BDIYI with Caroline and Nicky for some years.

Jayesh Mistry, Treasurer

Jayesh started yoga with Lilian Biggs in 1992. He continued his training in Birmingham with Jayne Orton and in High Wycombe with Sheila Haswell. Jayesh now teaches in the Leeds area. He is trained to Junior Intermediate Level 3, he regularly attends classes with senior teachers and has visited India to train with the Iyengar family in Pune.

Jo Lovell, Secretary / Coordinator

Jo first came across Iyengar Yoga in 1995 at Adult Education classes in Bradford, taught by Diana Bayliss, and soon realised its profound benefits. She trained with Lilian Biggs and qualified as a teacher in 2000 and currently holds Intermediate Junior Level 3 certificate. In 2005, Jo attended the RMIYI in Pune India and was taught by Geeta and Prashant Iyengar. She is based in Wharfedale, West Yorkshire where she teaches yoga full time. Jo became committee secretary in 2017.

Helen White, Committee member / Iyengar Yoga UK National Executive Representative – BDIYI

Helen has been practising Iyengar yoga since she moved to Leeds in 1993. Her first teacher was Alice Appleton, and she did her teacher training with Lilian Biggs. Helen teaches a variety of classes – including one in HMP Leeds, and teaching people with learning difficulties in Wetherby. She was secretary to the IYA Executive committee for 6 years, and is looking forward to returning as the representative of the BDIYI. When not doing yoga, she works part time, has an allotment, loves baking and walking.

Nicky Wright, Web Editor / Events

Nicky is an enthusiastic practitioner of Iyengar yoga and has been teaching since 2005, she is qualified to Intermediate Junior Level 3 and teaches in and around Lancashire where she is based. She has been involved with BDIYI committee for the last 12 years helping to organise events with Jacky & Caroline. She regularly visits India to be taught by the Iyengar’s and the RIMYI teachers and regularly attends intermediate classes and events throughout the UK and Europe.

Events

The BDIYI holds a programme of special events throughout the year with national and international Iyengar yoga teachers.
